Dear Friends of Life:
It may seem to many of you that we are spending a lot of time on the topic of embryonic stem cell research. Unfortunately we have little choice, for two reasons. First, embryonic stem cells, which are derived from killing a human being during the very first stages of life, are at the center of a great moral tragedy that is now being manipulated by the same groups that have created the abortion-without-limit situation in our country. Second, it appears that laws are brought up and voted on with very little advanced notice. Most votes have come withing one or two weeks, which is too short a time frame for LFL, since it takes us four weeks to get through the Post Office. There are a number of pro-life internet sites which offer a chance to be involved on an instant basis. For example, NJ Right to Life Legislative Alerts uses an e-mail system. If you have e-mail access, log on to the Legislative Action Center at the NJ Right to Life website (www.njrtl.org).
LETTERS FOR LIFE is an important resource for the majority of people because most legislators still look to see how many letters and post cards came in to the office.... They can not see how many e-mail messages are on the office computer, but it is hard to ignore physical mail.
EXPLANATION PARAGRAPH (for K of C, Five Minutes For Life and other groups)
PLEASE NOTE THE FORMAT FOR GROUP MEETINGS BELOW
A referendum for November is now being proposed which would permit voters to decide whether tax funding will be provided to operate 'clone-and-kill' laboratories involved with EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH. This referendum will become an important factor in the entire pro-life effort. Voters never had a chance to be directly involved in the abortion debate, but they have an opportunity now with respect to killing the unborn for stem cells. It is important for our readers to understand that Letters for Life is not a political organization, and the editor has absolutely no 'political agenda'. That being said, we know that the only way to get legislation to protect life, is to become involved in the political process. It is a matter of public record, probably well known to all, that the laws which now permit New Jersey to become a prominent player in EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH, were written and passed by the Democratic Party. Many of us are very disturbed that the party of our parents has chosen to make destruction of the unborn a part of their platform. Now it appears that the party leadership has made embryonic stem cell research an issue which every Democratic legislator must blindly accept without dissent or debate. (If this statement offends our members who are registered Democrats, we ask you to look at this month’s letter as an opportunity to make your party think about the issue; otherwise, we remain the 'enablers'.) We need to reach out to the Democratic Party leadership that should be closest to the 'grass-roots' of the party. Our letter this month will therefore be addressed to the CHAIRPERSON OF EACH COUNTY PARTY ORGANIZATION within the state. We want these men and women to hear that voters do not want to fund research that destroys, when it is clear that better alternatives are available. (We are also providing the Republican contact information for those who can write two letters.) SEND A LETTER TO THE CHAIRPERSON LISTED FOR THE COUNTY IN WHICH YOU LIVE.
For our new members, further information and suggested phrases are provided below to use in a letter, for those who want such assistance. You may use our suggested phrases, or use your own words. Post cards and hand-written letters are good; just keep them short and courteous. Remember, we depend entirely on your help and financial support, since there are no membership dues or fees. We have received just enough for this mailing, then we are again out of funds completely. Any donation, no matter how small, is important. Due to work load on volunteers we can not send acknowledgement for gifts less than $100, unless requested.
Sincerest Regards
